Loved it! Had been super curious about Wesson's backstory - not disappointed。 A great branch of the KDT world。 Loved it! Had been super curious about Wesson's backstory - not disappointed。 A great branch of the KDT world。 。。。more

It's not a bad story。 Above average, but as a KDT reader, I was left disappointed。 Wesson* is the same whiney kid at 12 as he is in the sequel。 There's 0 character growth。It would have been so much more interesting if there was some contrast; if he was excited to be a battlemage at the start of this book, and then something happened to make him do a 180。 Now that would be a powerful hook for KDT readers! seeing that contrast would make me want to keep reading to find out what caused the change。I It's not a bad story。 Above average, but as a KDT reader, I was left disappointed。 Wesson* is the same whiney kid at 12 as he is in the sequel。 There's 0 character growth。It would have been so much more interesting if there was some contrast; if he was excited to be a battlemage at the start of this book, and then something happened to make him do a 180。 Now that would be a powerful hook for KDT readers! seeing that contrast would make me want to keep reading to find out what caused the change。Instead, they use mystery (plot) as a hook。Prose: 7/10。 Good, above average。Setting: 7/10。 Good, above average。 world and magic system feel well fleshed out。 (As they should in a prequel)。Dialog。 6/10。 Generally good, but some feels clunky。 Exaggerated, like a kid's book。 Part of it may be the narrator。 Characters: 5/10 average。 Dissappointed in lack of protagonist's development。 Some side characters feel a bit shallow, coming across as caricatures/stereotypes。 Their actions don't feel well justified, just working as gears to move the plot along。Plot。 6/10 above average。 *Pacing: 7/10 good。 * 。。。more

It has been since 2019 since I read book 4 of this series by Kel Kade and I have been waiting ever so patiently。 I am pleased to say that the wait was so worth it。 Kel Kade is a master when it comes to her storytelling。Mage of No Renown is actually a prequel to King's Dark Tidings following Journeyman Wesson from age 12 to about 18。 Journeyman Wesson is one of the best characters in that series by far so I was keen to get a little more insight into his life。 It is a heartbreaking one。 Wesson is It has been since 2019 since I read book 4 of this series by Kel Kade and I have been waiting ever so patiently。 I am pleased to say that the wait was so worth it。 Kel Kade is a master when it comes to her storytelling。Mage of No Renown is actually a prequel to King's Dark Tidings following Journeyman Wesson from age 12 to about 18。 Journeyman Wesson is one of the best characters in that series by far so I was keen to get a little more insight into his life。 It is a heartbreaking one。 Wesson is such a cinnamon roll character with a huge heart who doesn't want to hurt anyone。 He wants to use his power for good, but unfortunately for me as a pure battle Mage and powers of destruction, the world is kind of against him。 Is that going to stop him, absolutely not。Like I said above this story follows him from 12 to 18。 It is so good from beginning to end。 It is funny, sad, tense, fast paced and really opens the door more to the world of Terralor。 One thing this book did exceptionally well is that it really shed light on the magic system。 Made it more comprehensive to the readers。 This is not to say it is difficult in the main series, but you do only get bits and pieces here and there。 Kind of like when someone doesn't give you all the details to your favorite recipes to keep you wondering and wanting more。I loved this book。 I needed this book。 I finished this book in two days。 I am sad that I finished this book already, but we are getting the long awaited book five of KDT in September, tentatively。 I wish more people would pick this series up and give it a chance。 Is it the greatest thing ever written no, but it is for me。 It is everything I love in books!P。S。 Kel Kade is finally, possibly, going to be releasing the entire series in physical form。 So when and if that happens I might just read it again。 Might。。。no it will happen! 。。。more

I absolutely love this book series。 I know it’s not perfect, but I still love it。 Wesson is a bit of a mystery and one of my favorite characters, so I was super stoked to read his story。 While I enjoyed it, and it wasn’t bad, it also wasn’t terribly exciting。 It was fun to see how Wesson got to where he was when Rezkin stumbled upon him in the woods, but overall I was slightly underwhelmed by the story。 Unfortunately, we didn’t really get to see more of Wesson’s personality or growth other than I absolutely love this book series。 I know it’s not perfect, but I still love it。 Wesson is a bit of a mystery and one of my favorite characters, so I was super stoked to read his story。 While I enjoyed it, and it wasn’t bad, it also wasn’t terribly exciting。 It was fun to see how Wesson got to where he was when Rezkin stumbled upon him in the woods, but overall I was slightly underwhelmed by the story。 Unfortunately, we didn’t really get to see more of Wesson’s personality or growth other than what we already knew of him from KDT。 The best bits were the…Easter eggs? Humorous foreshadowing? sprinkled throughout the book。 I listened to all the KDT books on audible, and they are amazing。 Nick Podehl is a superb narrator。 If you are way into KDT series like I am, you will enjoy this。 Happy reading! 。。。more

A stunning book with great promise。Excuse my grmamar, before I begin, this is a completely in depth review of what I felt on this promising new series。Lets start with the cons。 The pacing of the book felt a bit slow in some areas, some things seemed to drag , and at moments our main character doesn't seems to have the gravitas to engage a reader from zoning out, especially when he reverts to his constant inferiority complex。 Alas, one can almost believe they can predict what he will do, BUT then A stunning book with great promise。Excuse my grmamar, before I begin, this is a completely in depth review of what I felt on this promising new series。Lets start with the cons。 The pacing of the book felt a bit slow in some areas, some things seemed to drag , and at moments our main character doesn't seems to have the gravitas to engage a reader from zoning out, especially when he reverts to his constant inferiority complex。 Alas, one can almost believe they can predict what he will do, BUT then the author stunningly introduces a new facet, a new glimpse, a new edge to what we believe to know of the story, and character that completely enthralls the reader, keeping them engaged。 The author flows and weaves the story to their will, captivating the reader even beyond the slight hindrances I mentioned。 The Good - A STRONG theme-The ability to create characters that we truly care for and BOND with is astonishing。I felt their to be paper thin characters in the beginning, who by the end I ultimately found layered。the whole beginning of the book was an absolute ride and blast, and the author clearly has the ability to masterfully achieve top form just when you feel like asking "can they do it again"。They can, and it is an absolute pleasure to join along the ride。。 In conclusion, I am intrigued on seeing more stories from characters in this world, this book, a surprisingly strong stand alone- teases and hints for far more。。Thank you Kel Kade! 。。。more

I enjoyed itI recommend including the audio book with purchase, for the narration is superb。 I story is professional and a nice addition to KDT。 It was great to have some solid background on aspects touched upon in the series。 It makes me want this series to continue with books that follow the main storyline up until he figures out who the raven from his dream is。。。or at least the sword of fire。 These would essentially be the same stories as books 2, 3, 4, and maybe 5 but from the perspective of I enjoyed itI recommend including the audio book with purchase, for the narration is superb。 I story is professional and a nice addition to KDT。 It was great to have some solid background on aspects touched upon in the series。 It makes me want this series to continue with books that follow the main storyline up until he figures out who the raven from his dream is。。。or at least the sword of fire。 These would essentially be the same stories as books 2, 3, 4, and maybe 5 but from the perspective of the mage。 For those of us that have read or listened to your KDT series more times than we care to count, this would be great。 It should also be pretty easy since the story is mostly written。 The introspection of the mage through the main storyline would be any easy sell to me at least。 。。。more

I very much enjoyed this companion to the KDT series。 Wesson is one of my favorite characters and it was fun getting to see his backstory and how he perceives the world。 I thought it started out a little too juvenile at the beginning, but by the time Wesson meets his mentor, I started to really become engaged with the story。 My one complaint about Wesson’s personality would be his obsession with his former best friend/childhood love interest。 I realize that what she experienced when Wesson’s pow I very much enjoyed this companion to the KDT series。 Wesson is one of my favorite characters and it was fun getting to see his backstory and how he perceives the world。 I thought it started out a little too juvenile at the beginning, but by the time Wesson meets his mentor, I started to really become engaged with the story。 My one complaint about Wesson’s personality would be his obsession with his former best friend/childhood love interest。 I realize that what she experienced when Wesson’s powers emerged was traumatizing, but the fact that she totally writes him off and ignores him after he’s been her confidant and protector for years was frustrating。 I thought it was over the top that Wesson keeps frequently writing to her after YEARS of complete silence and plans to “come for her” and be with her romantically one day。 First of all, they didn’t have a romantic relationship to start with, and on top of that, they were 12 when he went away。 She wants nothing to do with him, and while I find her selfish and cruel for turning her back on him after he makes a tragic mistake, I find it a bit creepy and obsessive of him to keep writing to her that they’re going to be together when he shows back up one day。 Other than that aspect of the story, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it! It pulled me back into the KDT world and I’m anxiously awaiting book 5 coming out in a couple months。 。。。more
